thaer el bateen

As part of AtkinsRéalis, I contributed to the streetscape and access strategy of Thahr El Bateen — a key urban development in Abu Dhabi designed to enhance walkability, soft mobility, and shaded pedestrian comfort. The project was aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Urban Design Street Manual, ensuring universal access and climate‑responsive public realm solutions.

🌱 Vision & Scope

  • Establish a pedestrian‑friendly streetscape framework that reduces car dependency.

  • Integrate soft mobility networks (cycling and walking) into the urban fabric.

  • Create shaded corridors and green infrastructure to mitigate heat and improve microclimate.

  • Support Abu Dhabi Municipality’s vision of a sustainable, inclusive, and accessible city.

🏗️ Key Contributions

  • Access Strategy – Developed shaded pedestrian networks and cycling routes, ensuring universal access and connectivity.

  • Streetscape Design – Coordinated hardscape and softscape palettes, embedding shaded seating, planting, and wayfinding elements.

  • Climate‑Responsive Planting – Applied native Ghaf, Sidr, and Date Palm alongside adaptive ornamentals to reduce irrigation demand.

  • Sustainability Measures – Embedded water‑efficient irrigation, shaded structures, and resilient materials to withstand Abu Dhabi’s climate.

  • Public Realm Integration – Balanced modern urban design with cultural identity, ensuring the streetscape reflects Abu Dhabi’s heritage.

  • Documentation & Coordination – Delivered schematic and IFC packages, aligning with ADM guidelines and multidisciplinary teams.

🌍 Impact

The Thahr El Bateen project is envisioned as a benchmark for sustainable streetscape design in Abu Dhabi, offering shaded walkable networks, cycling routes, and ecologically resilient landscapes. It demonstrates how climate‑responsive design, cultural identity, and accessibility can be integrated into a cohesive urban framework that enhances community well‑being.
